Non-waiver trade deadline: 8 days, 2 hours, 1 minutes

Nationals in the hunt for Manny?

I was pretty surprised to hear last week that the Padres were a frontrunner to acquire the services of Manny Ramirez. San Diego needs bats, true enough, but I just didn't think that they could put together a package that would satify Theo Epstein while simultaneously not ravaging the Padres' farm system. Also, I'm not eager to see Jake Peavy traded.

If I was surprised last week, I am flabbergasted now. I just read that the Nationals might be interested in Manny! I'd love to know the source of this one. Stated flat-out: this rumor is absolutely absurd. The Nationals have nothing to trade and have been clear all off-season that their number one priority is to re-build the farm system. If I hear anything more about Manny to the Nationals, I will have to assume that Bowden has really lost it this time.
