Pat Borders retires
Pat Borders has finally called it a career. The 43-year old backstop, who began his professional career before current Dodgers catcher Dioner Navarro was even born, will be best remembered for his MVP performance during the 1992 World Series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Borders was recently promoted to Dodgers-affiliate Las Vegas from Vero Beach despite batting only .181 with 1 HR. He went one for 19 in six games with Las Vegas.
He leaves the game with a .253 average with 69 homers in 17 major league seasons.
For a more comprehensive review of Borders' career, see the feature on Bluebird Banter in their "Top 40 All-Time Greatest Blue Jays" series, where Pat Borders earned the rank of #33.
On a humorous side note, it seems that Pat will no longer be able to escape the chaos of home life–he and his wife Kathy have seven children: Lindsay, Levi, Luke, Laura, Leah, Lance and Lilly.
It's a shame his career ended with a whimper, considering how much he accomplished in Toronto. And it's incredible that all of his children's names begin with an L. It's somewhat similar to Roger Clemens' unhealthy obsession with the letter K, I guess. Though I wonder if, like Clemens, there's a baseball-related explanation behind it.
Oh my, I forgot about Clemens' K's!
L for "long ball"?
