MLB.com on Minaya: Singer's distraction spoils otherwise good article
New York Mets GM Omar Minaya made another big splash this weekend with the trade of Kris Benson to the Orioles for pitchers Jorge Julio and John Maine. Minaya has been very busy this off-season re-tooling his hometown Mets: he has acquired no less than 15 players, and let go of another 20. The team that hits the field in Flushing this spring won't be the same team we've seen before, that's for sure.
MLB.com's Tom Singer has penned a new feature on Minaya, centered on this latest trade. The article is a disappointment though, which surprised me since I generally enjoy Singer's commentary. Unfortunately, his newest piece keeps coming back to Kris Benson's wife, Anna Benson. I'd never heard of her, but she has a website and publishes photos of herself. Who cares?! I went to her site and read her bio, but I honestly couldn't figure out what she's promoting, other than her gargantuan ego. I have to presume that while Singer was writing his piece, he just couldn't take his eyes off Anna, and this is a shame for anyone who was expecting a more mature and informative article.
I have heard some commentators complain about Anna Benson's behavior. Apparently she listens to nothing but Sports talk radio and always calls into shows when she hears her husband being abused (in her opinion). The talk show hosts love it. I'm not sure if that is because they feel she is not too bright and they enjoy making fun of her, or what. But she does seem like someone who is trying to make herself a celebrity on the coat tails of her husband's legitimate stardom.
Thanks for the chuckle, Rick! I'm not too surprised that she regularly makes the air waves. She's probably great for the ratings! I read her "Scarlett Letters" on her website and they do pack a punch. She seems pretty out there, but apparently that's what Benson needs in a woman to be a mediocre pitcher. (Should I wait by the phone, or let the answering machine pick up Anna's inevitable rebuttal?)
She's probably already read this by now, Sam. There will probably be a letter to the editor of the Denman Island Shopping News from her this week.
