Like so many others, I read an exponential amount of MLB news as the trade deadline nears, so I'm not surprised to learn that trade rumors can be used as a pretty effective marketing platform for MLB clubs. Consider the recent news about Miguel Tejada's availability:
"Tejada's availability — even at an admittedly hefty price — lends an intriguing competitive element to the Orioles' mushrooming rivalry with their new territorial neighbors. With the ironman shortstop's presence, shoppers may no longer regard Washington outfielder Alfonso Soriano as the best player on the market. That perception might induce Nats GM Jim Bowden, who himself has been asking for 24-carat packages, to soften his demands."
