Mirabelli back to Boston

In an interesting move today, the Boston Red Sox have reacquired catcher Doug Mirabelli from the San Diego Padres. Mirabelli joined the Friars in the off-season in a trade that sent 2B-man Mark Loretta to Boston. In return, the Padres get catcher Josh Bard, pitcher Cla Meredith and either a player to be named later or cash.

Bard has hit .278 this season, while Mirabelli has had limited success at the plate, posting a .182 average in 22 games with the Padres. This appears to be the only bright light for San Diego in this trade however as many feel that Bard won't excel past a certain point defensively, and word on the street is that Meredith is overrated.

For Boston, snagging Mirabelli before the Yanks did is a coup. Mirabelli can return to be knuckleballer Tim Wakefield's personal backstop–something Bard just couldn't handle.
