Non-waiver trade deadline: 8 days, 2 hours, 3 minutes

David Wells to the Padres

One of the announcers of the Houston Astros game just announced that the Padres will be acquiring David Wells tonight.

After today's loss to the Athletics, Theo Epstein simply must make a move. Wells will likely retire at the end of the season, so this is the Red Sox' only chance to get something meaningful in exchange for Wells.

The big rumor has involved LA's Matt Kemp, but the Dodgers would be nuts to give up a prospect for a 2 month rental. There just have to be more names involved. Note that both Mark Loretta and Mike Lowell have cleared waivers, so we might be looking at a package deal of some kind.

Wells wants to be on the West Coast or with a contender. I think San Diego will get their man.
