BoSox close to signing shortstop?

I've heard from several sources (including this post at MLB Trade Rumors) that Alex Gonzalez is very close to signing with the Red Sox. Alex was a favourite of mine when he played for Toronto, but while he sported decent defense skills, his offense never really lived up to the hype. Still, I was happy to see him play ever so briefly for the Expos a couple of years ago. Now, Boston appears very close to settling on Alex, and I can't help but wonder if this is a mistake for the BoSox. While he's a full 3 years his senior, wouldn't Royce Clayton be a better signing?

BallHype: hype it up!

  1. Yes, Clayton would be better. Better fielder, much more consistent batter. He hasn't got the occasional pop of Gonzalez but I think he would be a much better anchor for the infield.

  3. Thanks for backing me up on that one, Rick! It sounds like we have some company too: Tom Verducci of SI.com is giving this potential acquisition a grade of C.

  5. The other Gonzalez

Ooops! It seems I have made my analysis of the Gonzalez to Boston trade rumor a little too quickly. According to All-Baseball.com, the trade is for Alex Gonzalez of the Marlins, not Alex Scott Gonzalez of the Devil Rays. This works out a little better…

  7. Hmmm…I think the Marlins' Gonzalez has had a few years with 20 or so homeruns but he has always struck me as the kind of player who only plays hard when he wants to - which is not all that often. I'd still rather have Clayton.
