Backup backstops
While listening to the Nationals/Marlins spring training game today on Gameday Audio, I caught some discussion about Frank Robinson's comments from earlier this morning about who will land the backup catcher position. Robert Fick, acquired this off-season from the Padres, may have been a leading choice, but last week's elbow surgery has set him back. Matt LeCroy, another off-season acquisition, has hit well in spring training (.375 BA, 6 for 16, 1 HR) but isn't known for his defensive prowess. That leaves veteran Mike DeFelice, who is hitting well in spring training and knowns how to handle pitchers; Wiki Gonzalez, who is 4 for 12 at the plate right now but also has two fielding errors to his name; and former Blue Jay Alberto Castillo, who is currently playing for the Dominican Republic in the WBC, and is known as a defensive specialist with a weak bat. Not easy choices considering the rampant mediocrity here. I'm not sure who will win the job… what do you think? Cast your vote in our new Reader Poll! (See column at right.)
